If You Are New to Yoga

We have a variety of classes, workshops and events for you to choose from. If you would like some information or guidance about where to begin please do not hesitate to email or come into our studio to meet with Lisa Matthews or our highly experienced certified instructors.  We do however suggest you begin with one of our many stretch classes. We believe that yoga should be practiced mindfully. This means listening to your body, using props, and modifying poses.   If you are new to the practice or if you have an injury or limitation, please let the instructor know so they may offer suggestions on how to take care of yourself during practice. Just remember to get on your mat and practice.  The more yoga you practice, the more you benefit, and the better you will feel.

We want your practice to be a wonderful experience EVERY time. Our staff welcomes and encourages your questions and feedback! Let us know how we are doing and how we can help.

Arrive on time

Being in a hurry is already a tizzy-inducing situation but rushing into a yoga class is stressful for both you and your classmates. Scurrying into a class after it’s begun is distracting for your fellow yogis. Be sure to arrive on time, giving yourself enough time to check in, put away your items, and roll out your mat. Got a few extra minutes before class begins? Sit quietly and focus on your breath or shop in our beautiful boutique.

No devices or shoes in studio practice space

Whistles, dings, and beeps are incredibly distracting and, frankly, downright rude. Put your device on SILENT and leave it the lobby cubbies with your shoes/personal items.

Can’t stay for savasana?

Leave before. We get it. Time is short, your schedule is tight, and your day is packed with things to do. Savasana is a time for stillness and deep rest that lets your body fully receive the benefits of yoga. Close your eyes, focus on your breath, and feel the weight of your body against the floor. It’s your own little R&R opportunity. Take it. Absolutely, positively have to leave class early? Let your teacher know BEFORE class, position yourself close to the door, and be sure to leave before savasana begins. When it’s time to leave, pack up and scoot out as quietly as you can.

Clean up

If you’re borrowing the studio’s props, be sure to return them to their rightful place upon leaving. Leaving your space as clean as you found it is respectful to the studio and students in later classes.

Preparing for Your Home Practice (If Virtual – Live / Pre-recorded)

As many of us have transitioned to taking yoga stretch fitness classes at home, we have some suggestions for creating a space for your home practice. The best part about creating such a space is that there’s no wrong way to do this. All you need is a little time, some supplies, and your good intentions.

Clear enough space or choose an area that allows you to lie on your back and stretch your arms overhead. In the summer months, you may even go outside in your own yard, patio, or deck.

If you have traditional yoga props this is wonderful. But, please don’t worry if you don’t have traditional props, because you may improvise using items you already have at home. Consider using a towel (for a blanket), or a pillow, or try rolling two to three blankets in a tight and firm roll (for a bolster), thick books (for blocks), a belt from a bathrobe, scarf, belt or a jump rope (for a strap), and water bottles, soup cans or cork blocks (for hand weights). Creativity with props can be fun. Remember that each body and practice is special in its own way. Find props that work for you.  If your creative props aren’t working well, contact me at 973-452-2828 to order cork blocks, resistance bands, or bolsters for your practice. We understand that having a space like this in your home is a luxury, so if space is limited, no worries! You will still have an awesome home practice. Just remember to get on your mat and practice!

  • Are new to yoga.
  • Have any medical considerations (such as pregnancy or injuries/limitations). If you are pregnant or have injuries or have had injuries our teachers are qualified to work with you to modify your practice suitable for your special needs.
